Way Too!
I was taking a break from my homework to answer someone's question about Canadian content over on
Barbelith, and once again became absorbed with this longtime obsession of mine. You may have noticed that I throw an awful lot of Canadiana in here. It's always been my intention to write a book on Canadian comics, specifically the Golden Age, a period in time which saw an artificial surge in Canadian comics. While digging around in an effort to locate one of the last surviving creators of Canadian Golden Age comics for a potential interview, I stumbled upon
this site. I had been on the National Archives of Canada
Guardians of the North site before, but had never, ever thought to click on the
Beyond the Funnies button.
There you'll find a
history of English-Canadian comics, another one for
Quebecois comics, and most surprisingly, scans of full issues of numerous excellent and diverse
Canadian comics. This is really fucking amazing. It includes full issues of Golden Age comics, plus the amazing
Reid Fleming, World's Toughest Milkman, the first 11 pages of
L'Affaire Madame Paul,
Colin Upton,
Dishman (who I never thought I'd see again), the first issue of
Cerebus,
Paul a la Campagne, a
Captain Canuck comic which gave me nightmares as a kid,
Louis Riel (possibly the greatest Canadian comic ever), and more.
Expect to see a lot more Canadian content in the weeks to come!
